The Debate

Despite efforts to encourage people out of their cars and put extra investment into the bus and rail network, car use and air travel are increasing in the UK. Unless the public’s demand for transport can be reduced, new roads and airports will be required. To meet such demand it will be necessary to develop new land. There is a balance to be struck between economic growth, personal freedom to travel, and environmental impact, but sensible choices can be made where no one interest takes precedence over others. Much of our transport need is determined by how and where we live.

The Debate

'Climate change' describes the variability of weather systems over extended periods of time. It occurs as a result of complex and poorly understood natural cycles, but may also be influenced by human activity. Most of the current debate over climate change has become synonymous with the extent of 'anthropogenic (human-induced) global warming'. Most citizens accept unquestioningly that industrialised society is causing unprecedented and potentially catastrophic changes to global weather patterns.

Scientific Alliance Position

We believe that a rational approach to our one of our primary natural resources - land - is important for a variety of reasons. There are a number of seemingly conflicting interests which have to be balanced, including the livelihood of farmers, food security, supply of renewable raw materials, biodiversity and the visual and recreational aspects of landscape. An open-minded approach to all issues and a willingness to learn from the best of various alternative management systems is likely to produce the best outcomes for all. Single-minded, doctrinaire philosophies are not the answer.

Scientific Alliance Position

We believe that how people live and travel is an important area for which there is no simple “best” solution. We support the development of new building methods and design which can improve energy efficiency and enhance quality of life, but people’s needs should not necessarily be given second priority behind environmental considerations. The need or urge to travel cannot easily be denied, and rational alternative ways to fulfil it should be sought as far as possible.
